THE STORY OF A LITTLE CANDLE
On a New Year’s Eve villagers gathered in the center of their village. They sang a traditional blessings song and went to visit every house of the village. They carried fire, water from spring and sacred plants to burn. At every house they lit up a candle, sprinkled some water over the house, and smudged the door with plants. They have asked fire, water, earth and air to bless the family and place. People always prepared big candles, so that they ...would last throughout the year, lit at special occasions. In one of the houses lived old lady, she was not healthy for a long time; she couldn’t walk through the village on a blessing giving eve. When villagers came to her home and knocked, she came out with a little candle. It was the only one left in her house. People were surprised, ready to find bigger one for her, though she thanked them, saying she wouldn’t need bigger one. Shaman of the village saw her future and she said to the old lady: “Your little candle will light someone’s candle this year. Do not waste it, until that is fulfilled.” So they blessed her home and went. Weeks passed by and old lady got weaker, though she remembered words of the shaman and she carried little candle with her all the time. In late spring she got really ill and neighbors brought her into their house and took care of her. They had many children in the family and mom had her hands full not being able to spend much time with them. And surely you can imagine their life. Old lady loved the company of young ones. She couldn’t run with them, but oh, she knew so many stories and she could tell them really well. Little ones were all ears around her. She blessed that house with so much wisdom and peace, since she came, that family lightened up as never before. Mom got calm and content, father returned smile back on his face. And old lady forgot about her lonely days and let joy of life run in her veins again. Now you wonder about that little candle, don’t you? Well, I haven’t heard about it being lit up yet.
